If you are really angry about immigration
If you are really angry about immigration then you should be asking questions about U.S. foreign policy.

In the aftermath of the extremely racist Arizona anti-immigrant legislation-SB 1070-and the fact that opinion polls seem to indicate that a majority of the public supports this obliteration of basic human rights, it is worth asking a few tough questions.  Let's start with these:

  1. Was the financial collapse in the fall of 2008 caused by immigrants-documented or otherwise?

  2. Has the decline of the U.S. auto industry, and the corresponding loss of thousands of jobs, been the result of immigrants?

  3. Has the U.S. lost its shipbuilding industry due to immigrants?

  4. Is there any recession (or depression) on record that can be attributed to immigrants?

If you cannot demonstrate that immigration has had anything to do with the declining economy and its impact on working people, then you need to look for other culprits.

What is happening in Arizona is a travesty.  Playing on fears, a racist piece of legislation was passed that allegedly addresses a problem that has been proven to be on the decline.    That's right, undocumented immigration is declining.  Yet the legislation that was passed was playing to the fears largely of White Americans who are watching the demographics of the USA change.  In that sense the Arizona legislation that aims to go after anyone appearing to be an "illegal alien" is not so much aimed at undocumented immigrants but is aimed at Chicanos and Native Americans as populations, and also aimed at stirring up right-wing fears among whites, driving them to the Republican Party.

Contemporary immigration has resulted from several critical factors.  One has to do with the legacy of colonialism and Western domination of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, which deformed the societies and economies of these regions.  A second has to do with wars, many of which are directly related to the active interference of outside powers, particularly the USA and Europe. A third has to do with the growing environmental crisis, including but not limited to global warming, wherein lands are becoming deserts, on the one hand, and being submerged under water, on the other hand.

Putting this all together, the immigration that we are witnessing is not the result of people coming with the intent to steal "our" jobs but is the result of desperation.  Playing on this desperation are unscrupulous employers who seek vulnerable and inexpensive labor.

Putting up walls or massive raids on immigrant communities does not come close to addressing the real challenge.  People are moving to the USA, Western Europe and Canada not because they want to, but because they have to.  Insofar as they are unable to have real self-determination because their economies have been dominated and/or destroyed by Western countries or to the extent to which their lands have been devastated by wars financed by the West, millions move.

This is the discussion that must take place, including within Black America.  Too many African Americans find themselves seduced by anti-immigrant bias in large part because of the desperation of our own condition.  As we have watched our own jobs disappear and seen ruthless employers utilize immigrant labor, it is not surprising that there are resentments that emerge.  That, however, does not justify such feelings.

Arizona's anti-immigrant legislation is the logical outcome of deep-seated racism combined with a refusal to acknowledge the implications of U.S. economic and political actions on the rest of the world, particularly toward Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.  In other words, for those who believe-rightly or wrongly-that immigration is out of control and is somehow a threat, they should not look south of the border but should look into the U.S. mirrorand be prepared for the shock of their lives.

Bill, I see your point but...
1) September 2008 collapse is actually
brought to you by the same people who are importing fraudulently documented illegal aliens and those encouraging staying beyond their expired visas.
2) The decline in the USA Auto Industry, again, is brought to you by the same people who not only want fraudulently documented illegal aliens, but those same executives lobbied for decades to be protected from their planned obsolesence profit model, otherwise known as GM Ford Chrysler rolling junk. Those executives did not want to compete on a quality basis for profit reasons. They do not want quality employees either, same reason profit.

3) In terms of economy impacts from the presence of either TOO many immigrants or TOO many fraudulently documented foreign nationals, have you looked at wage growth adjusted for inflation of Americans over the last 30 years?

IF the above executives cannot offshore for cheap labor, they will import cheap labor. I do not call that efficiency, I call that global trade for US jobs, and turning the USA into Mexico's 2 class society, Rich and Poor.

Also, look up Chicano...
Where are their origins?

Why isn't everyone protesting about "unscrupulous employers" then?

BTW, if I may be permitted to disagree with you on the 'racism' thing? I believe it is a Globalization problem. I believe it is an ELITIST exploitation problem. I believe it is a corruption problem. People like me are ready to fight the racism, but the other problems I need BIG help with. Thks

Dear Bill Fletcher Jr,
Because the AZ bill wants to enforce the Federal Law, and states that you can only ask for proof of citizenship if that said person being stopped has broken the law, you seem to think that it is racist. Note; the Federal law doesn't even state that. So what part of the law is it that you don't understand? Breaking the law is okay! I know liberals think tht's okay in their world. Then you go on stating conditions of our economy collapse and claim they had nothing to do it with. Really! What about all the illegals that come here and have destroyed our health care system. What about all the illegals that come here, get paid under the table and send all than money back to Mexico. Did you dare look at Pennsylvania
where some areas have had a recent population increase and haven't seen any revenue come in...How about 40% increase and not $1.00 Hmmmmm What did they do, move here and not spend any money or more like they are illegas taking jobs sending there money back to Mexico. The illegals have cost American more money than the Iraq War...
Now there's a story I might aggree with your liberal mind set. Illegal is illegal and it's against the law. Period.

Bill Fletcher: America is the host country and Calderon came here and insulted America's immigration policy while his country treat immigrants as criminals with long term jailings near to slavery with filthy squalid conditions Mexico is well known for. The gall of these immigrants who blatantly violate America border laws and soak our economic system at the expense of long-term tax paying Americans whose health care is now in jeapordy. Calderon and his government and his liasons is behind manipulating his citizens to violate America's laws to establish Mexico's piss-poor economy compounded with his country's drug running. The liberals here in America has gone insane conveniently using the race-card to paint all whites as racist. It is unconscionable what Mexico's government would do to immigrants who demonstrated and demanded Mexico's government give them free health care, more money, more welfare, more jobs. In addition immigrants would demand that Mexico's government drop all practices of "stop and search" of immigrants and allow "open border crossing." You say absurd? Of course it is yet these liberal racists here in America expect America to perform these outragious practices. The double-standard is obvious and odious and thuggary. It would be no surprise to me if Caleron's government actually bribe liberals here in America to pump the liberal views so many liberal espouse, it is so overt and obvious. For America to absorb 50 million illegal immigrants into America's economy and population would be downright criminal and disastrous as the world perceive us as simpletons and saps. No other country would allow this in no fashion, shape or form. But the liberal racist minded Democrats because of politics will purge this nation into ruin to establish socialism where Mexican immigrants (not all of course) have no concept of loyalty to America's values. This is a deliberate stealthy scheme by Mexico to take territory they deem is theirs from past claims. In other nations this would mean war as Mexico take advantage of an inept, purposely naive American leadership.

This nascent naive administration need to pull their thumb out of their mouths and realize that this is an invasion by Mexico who see America as included in their budget through the drug cartels who use it's citizens to channel their monies back to Mexico's budget.
