On the Sixth Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, A Community Voice is hosting a community event to debut the new book, The Battle of the Ninth Ward by ACORN founder Wade Rathke, which details the behind-the-scenes story of how residents organized against eminent domain and saved their community.
Residents who were there in the midst of the fight will lead a discussion on about their successful campaigns against city officials who wanted to turn their neighborhood into wetlands and the struggles since Katrina to get their fair share of the billions of recovery dollars that came into New Orleans. Wade Rathke and Vannesa Gueringer will be on hand to answer questions and sign copies of the book.
The Battle of the Ninth Ward is the inspiring story of how residents came together against all the odds to save their Lower 9th Ward neighborhood provides hope to low-income communities everywhere who are struggling with the aftermath of both natural and man-made disasters.
“Understanding the story of where we have been and what we have gone through to save our neighborhood, provides a setting for how far we have come and why we are not giving up until we have our neighborhood fully restored,” says A Community Voice Vice-President Vanessa Gueringer. “We are utilizing our experiences and knowledge as ACORN leaders to continue to fight for equity in rebuilding as A Community Voice and demand that the City of New Orleans ‘spend the money where you raised it’ and restore and rebuild all of our schools, parks and hospitals.”
